Growing Resilience in Tacoma (GRIT) was a 12-month guaranteed income demonstration that United Way of Pierce County ran in partnership with the City of Tacoma, Mayors for a Guaranteed Income, and CGIR. From December 2021 to December 2022, 110 families in Tacoma received $500 in unconditional cash each month. The program was designed to address economic insecurity and its negative effects on individuals and the community. GRIT also acted as an advocate and leader for legislative progress as it advised on the design of a statewide guaranteed income bill for Washington.
