The City of Newark, New Jersey launched its first mayor-led guaranteed income pilot program. In collaboration with the Newark Movement for Economic Equity (NMEE), CGIR conducted a Randomized Control Trial with 400 randomly selected Newark residents who were at least 18 years old with income below 200% of the federal poverty line. Participants received unconditional disbursements of $6,000 per year for 2 years in two different frequencies: half received the payments on a bi-weekly basis and half received the payments twice yearly.
